Red Hot Poker - Kniphofia uvaria Flamenco

   Kniphoia grows to 3 feet tall, with orange, red or yellow flowers on tall stems in mid summer. May rebloom if spent flowers are cut back. Makes a good cut flower. Prefers full sun in average to ferile soil. Good in a group by themselves or in a mixed bed. Zones 5 - 10.
 

Rhubarb, Ornamental - Rheum palmatum v. tanguticum

 The 2 to 3 foot nearly round leaves emerge in spring. The leaves are gree and purple underneath. The 6 to 8 foot plants send up 2 foot stalks with red, white or pink blooms in late spring - early summer. Needs moisture and a rich soil. Part shade is recommended.

 

Rock Cress - Arabis compinkie

   This ground cover likes full sun to part shade. Looks great climbing over a rock wall. Likes dry soil, and should be divided every three years or so. Grows 3 to 4 inches tall. In mid to late spring it will be covered with small pink fragrant flowers. Cut back after flowering so that the foliage looks good. Zone 3 - 7.
 

Rose Campion - Lycnis

   Technically a biennial, this plant will reseed and like Sweet William reappear every year. Bright pink flowers on soft woolly stems. Height to 24 inches. Prefers full sun, part shade, well drained average to fertile soil. Great mixed in among other plants. Plants when young form a small rosette about 4 to 6 inches tall and not to noticeable, until flowering when stalks are sent up.

 

Rudbeckia 'Goldstrum'

   This is a derivative of our native Black Eyed Susan. Flowers from mid summer to early fall. Yellow flowers with a brown center. This cone in the center attracts butterflies. Plant in a mass or single, beautiful either way. Adds a nice punch of color to the garden. Height 18 to 24 inches, full sun to part shade, hardy from zones 3 to 9.
 

Russian Sage, Perovski

 Perovski sage grows as a multi stemmed plant with flower panicles at the ends of each stem. The foliage is finely cut gray-green leaves with a slight scent. These are very easy to grow. They tolerate poor dry soil, but average soil is preferred. Great as a back ground plant. Prune back to about 6" in the spring, before new growth starts.
 

Sedum 'Autumn Delight'

   Chartreuse-yellow leaves and a blue-green serrated margin. Pink flower heads in late summer to fall. Butterflies like this plant. Full sun, 18 to 24 inches tall. Zone 3 -9.
 

Sedum 'Autumn Joy' - Sedum

  Great plant for the fall garden. Thick fleshy leaves grow thru out the summer and in late summer to fall send out a flower stalk that appears at the top of the stem with soft pink flowers. Bees and butterflies enjoy the flowers. Leave the dead flowers on in the winter for winter interest in the garden. Cut back in spring before new growth starts.
 

Sedum 'Crazy Ruffles'

   Blue-green leaves, undulating toothed margins on an upright tight forming clump. Red stems with soft pink flowers. Height 18 to 24 inches. Liked by butterflies. Good in mixed borders or in the front of beds. Full sun. Hardy zones 3 - 9.

 

Sedum sieboldii

   Forms a rounded mound. Grows 8 to 10 inches tall, and horizontally . Rounded blue-green leaves with a touch of pink around edges.  Liked by butterflies. Good edging plant or great in containers. Zone 3 - 9.
 

Sedum 'Vera Jameson'

Succulent type plant, does well in dry places such as a rock garden. Equally at home in average garden soil in a flower bed. Grows to 24 inches, producing pink flowers in late summer to early fall. Looks good if left in the garden uncut. Purple leaves add a nice contrast against lighter colored plants.

 

Strawberry 'White Alpine'

Unique fruit. Not something you usually find in a garden. This is a white strawberry, they are ripe when the seeds turn from green to brown. Taste is a cross between pineapple and strawberry. Full sun, produce many runners so your bed will fill fast. Ripen mostly in spring with a few berries thru out the summer.

Tiarella 'Silverado'

   Great shade plant, with airy spikes of white flowers in the spring. Can be used in pots as well. Nice foliage, use as a ground cover in wooded areas. Height 8 to 10 inches, part shade to shade. Zone 4 - 9.
